Overcoming Objections to the Cloud: Strategies for MSPs

Overcoming Objections to the Cloud: Strategies for MSPs

June 11, 2015 by Robert Hayes

Here's how MSPs can overcome objections to the cloud.Despite the obvious advantages of cloud computing, many MSPs are finding that some businesses are still hesitant to adopt cloud technology. These organizations often cite similar reasons for their reluctance; security, data losses, integration, and compliance. In reality, these issues can be overcome through careful planning and customer education.

Here are strategies to help MSPs address client concerns about the cloud:

Cloud Security

Because cloud computing is Internet-based, many businesses worry that the information they store online is subject to security risks. While these risks were more pronounced when the cloud first emerged, they have been greatly mitigated by improved cloud security measures.

Every now and then a high-profile security failure occurs, fueling concerns over cloud safety. The truth is that businesses face very little risk if they use (and stick to) well-established security protocols. MSPs can add value by offering contingency strategies that can be used in the unlikely event of a breach.

Data Protection

Despite the fact that the cloud provides advanced protection for important data, many enterprises are under the false impression that crucial information can be “swallowed up,” or simply lost in the cloud. These concerns stem from previous generations of cloud technology and are no longer a threat.

To combat this misperception, MSPs should promote their data safety records when selling cloud services to clients. Again, taking the initiative to offer an emergency plan can go a long way towards alleviating client data protection concerns.

Easy Integration

Integration is another commonly cited concern. Enterprises fear that it will take much time (and by extension, too much money) to incorporate cloud strategies and train staff appropriately. The reality is that the cloud saves businesses far more money than it costs. By outsourcing hardware, software, and IT architecture to the cloud, companies relieve themselves of the burden of hardware investments.

MSPs can also offer to provide training to staff members. While it’s normal for a few kinks to turn up here and there, integration is actually quite easy when it’s performed in stages, one task at a time.

Maintaining Compliance

Compliance issues, like data protection and security concerns, have largely been eliminated by the current generation of cloud technologies. Built-in compliance and standards features ensure that businesses don’t have to worry about these issues, since they are already accounted for during the solution design process.

Education is the key to overcoming client concerns about the cloud. MSPs that focus on the technology’s many benefits, while honestly and comprehensively addressing potential problems, stand the best chance of selling businesses on the cloud’s long list of inherent advantages.
