Unified Communications Trends Shaking the Industry

Unified Communications Trends Shaking the Industry

June 19, 2017 by Robert Hayes

Unified Communications is changing the way the industry works. What are you doing to stay relevant as the IT landscape changes? When it comes to unified communications and collaboration, things move fast, which is why it’s important to stay on top of this issue.

The traditional approach to unified communications is to simply define the requirements and go after a solution that will meet those basic needs. With the rapid changes in technology today, however, companies must think more broadly. There have been five strategic and technological advancements that have an impact on how unified communications and collaboration strategies are changing.

1. The Rise of Team Chat
Top chat vendors, such as Symphony and Slack, are now referring to their platforms as operating systems. Solutions like these are allowing users to intersect their workflows, which works to address the need for unified communications and collaboration.

2. The Digital Workplace Is Expanding
Younger generations are shaking up the traditional workplace as they demand more freedom to work remotely. The digital workplace enables employees to gain access to the tools required to do their jobs from anywhere. With unified communications, tasks, events, and message flows can all be integrated for more efficiency.

3. AI and Cognitive Computing
Speed and workflow efficiencies are part of the process towards faster business growth. Even though such technological advancements as AI and cognitive computing are still in their infancy, they hold keys to certain practical advantages in the unified communications space, such as helping employees make better decisions and eliminate repetitive tasks.

4. Inter-CRM Capabilities
A standard unified communications transaction might take place around chat where you access a document in your CRM and share it with others around you via an instant messaging app. A new trend taking shape is to use an in-app collaboration tool to share such documents. Office suites from Microsoft and Google are offering this capability. If your company uses Salesforce, you’re probably already using their in-app communication tool.

5. Cloud
While many companies are finding great cost savings in the cloud, others are simply looking for more agility. The cloud offers exactly that benefit, especially with unified communications needs. The rate at which technology is advancing is accelerating. On-premise platforms are quickly becoming things of the past.
